Clinical Supervision is central to the process of counsellor training, and ongoing professional development. Supervision equips counsellors with the skills to protect the client’s best interests and enhance the positive clinical outcomes for the people they serve.
Research has identified a range of benefits to engaging in supervision, including improved client outcomes, enhanced capacity to monitor and regulate ethical practice, and an increase in general counselling skills.
There are many reasons to be proactive in getting supervision for ourselves. First, supervision is a central form of support, where we can focus on our own difficulties as a therapist as well as have our supervisor share some of the responsibility of the work we do with our clients. Second, supervision forms part of our continual learning and development as therapists.
A good supervisor can also help us to use our own resources better, manage our workload, self-care, and challenge our inappropriately patterned ways of coping. We think that, if we are helping clients make more change of their own lives, it is essential that we are doing the same. Finally, there is research to show that good supervision correlates with job satisfaction.
